holiday climbing wreath

Posted on Mon, 24 Dec 2012
1 i gathered a couple of old climbing magazines, a styrofoam circle, wooden skewers, tape, my glue gun, a paper clip cut in half, and a handful of glue sticksi then separated the magazine pages and started making cones out of each page with a piece of tape and a skewer
2 then i drew started inserting the skewer cones into the styrofoam, starting on the outside, and keeping the cones closely togetherthis was tricky – i learned that you need to keep at least 1.5-2″ of skewer sticking out of the cone so that it stays in place.

however, i also figured out that if you stream a little hot glue on the edges of the skewer after inserting them before starting a new row of cones, they stick much better

3 this is not something that can be quickly made – you need patience for this project.i was hoping to get it done in 30min, but it took a few hours. making the cones took the most time.

i kept adding more innter circles of cones and worked my way toward the center … about 3 rows of cones for this particular wreath.

4 once the circle got pretty close, i attached the paper clip with hot glue. this will be the loop to hang the wreath.
5 then i gathered some pine cones, hot glued them into a pile in the center…

… and voila! we have a lovely climbing-holiday wreath! yay!

… if you look closely enough, you’ll see that it was too big … i couldn’t close the storm door without crushing the wreath. DOH!

so i ended up hanging it in the kitchen. ha!
